About

It was serendipity that brought Roland “sticks” Benesocky and Yves “the stone” St Hilaire together as partners.  Working as neighbours, each in their own area of expertise, a conversation started one day in the back lane about fusing wood and concrete together.  Each product beautiful on its own but together, breathtaking, sexy and limitless in the possibilities.  From there Sticks and Stones Furniture was born.

Roland has always had the desire to be creative and work with his hands.  For him, wood as a medium was an obvious choice. “I’ve spent a lot of time in the out of doors and came to appreciate the beauty, fragrance and feel of the forest.  I knew that under the guidance of my hands I could create breathtaking pieces from this most awesome of natural products.”

For Yves, the desire to make beautiful pieces from concrete began many years ago while playing in the sand.  With pail and shovel in hand he started mixing the sand with water and voila, a multitude of shapes took form.  From there it was a short jump to present day and his fascination and love affair with concrete.  “It has a visual warmth, a natural beauty and a tactile quality, and because it starts as liquid stone, it can become whatever you want it to be”.

For both designers, having the ability to be creative and design pieces that match a person’s personality is what keeps the passion alive.  Some clients come to us with a design in hand while others have a vague sense of what they want.  Whatever the scenario, we make their visions become a reality.

At our studio in Squamish, BC, the recreation capital of Canada, you’ll find us working hard but having fun.  It’s not unusual to find the team playing a quick game of street hockey out back, going for a ride at lunch or hiking the Chief.  This concept of play at work allows the creative juices to keep flowing.

Bottom line is we love what we do and we do it well!
