Green

We make dramatic, eye-catching signature pieces out of concrete and wood and we do it in a manner that is good for the planet.  Sticks and Stones Furniture was founded on the core belief that business can be done in a sustainable and socially conscious manner.  What follows is our commitment to You and Mother Earth and what we are doing to stay true to our beliefs.

For our “sticks” we try to use only locally sourced recycled, reclaimed, sustainably harvested timber or FSC certified wood materials.  We truly believe that a living space decorated with natural, sustainable materials adds a great deal of tranquility and spiritual ambiance.  Our intent is to make our furniture last not only your lifetime but that of your great grandchildren.

Our “stone” is in fact hand crafted, pre-cast concrete.  There are many different opinions on concrete as a green material so here’s our take on it, you decide…

Our concrete mixture contains a recycled component call fly-ash, a by product from the coal burning industry that would otherwise end up in a landfill, which increases durability and our green commitment.  Besides maximizing the green qualities of our concrete, we strive to make all of our materials and processes as environmentally friendly as possible.  We use FDA approved water based-sealers and carnuba wax to seal our concrete, eliminating the off-gassing of harmful VOC’s.  To reduce our electrical consumption we cure our concrete at ambient temperatures except on the coldest of winter days (we are in Canada after all!) when we lovingly cover them in heat blankets rather than leaving the heat on in the studio.

It is our humble opinion that concrete is the least harmful “stone” option for interior and exterior spaces.  It’s renewable, recyclable, doesn’t have to be transported great distances and gosh darn it – it looks and feels great.

Sticks and Stones is committed to our community in that we hire local artisans and staff and use locally sourced products whenever possible. We recycle everything we can including wood and concrete waste at a full-phase organic recycling company. We are in the process of installing rain barrels (it rains a lot in Squamish) to capture water for general use around the studio.  Futhermore, our commitment to our global community is evident in our partnership with Me to We, where we donate 1% of sales to Free the Children.
Our commitment to you and the planet is to do everything within our means to run an environmentally and socially responsible studio, to constantly expand those means and to continually redefine what it means to be green.
