Our Environmental Commitment
No matter the type of custom furniture design, at Sticks and Stones Furniture we always strive to go back to the basics – which means working under a reduce, reuse, recycle and rethink environmental code of ethics.
Here are some of the ways we do it:
Reduce
- Ninety nine per cent of our materials come from within 100 miles (sand and aggregate which is 75 per cent of the mix comes from less than 2km from our workshop
- We have just replace our old halogen and incandescent light bulbs with energy efficient LED’s in the shop and showroom, a win win, a savings with our hydro bill and a much brighter work atmosphere
Reuse
- We enjoy searching for that salvaged piece of wood, from an old building being demolished to a 60 year old bridge stringer.
- Fly-ash and recycled glass (if desired) are two components of our concrete mixture
Recycle
- This is a no brainer: Â we recycle everything we can… from batteries, paper, plastics etc… to even our seconds which often are donated to a great local business near us that re sells anything to do with home renovations
- Concrete excess is turned into wine rack cubes or pavers
- We hate to say it, but should you ever want to discard your Sticks and Stones concrete product – you can do so easily since our rebar is made of fiberglass. (Part of our cradle to grave philosophy for our custom furniture)
Rethink
- We are always challenging ourselves to find innovative ways to incorporate the four Rs
- To decorate our showroom, we used scrap cedar from a local mill and we repurposed our existing concrete floor
- Part of a wall (metal) is taken down and used as a floor during design shows
- We never use printed brochures or flyers (not even at shows)
- Our concrete colour samples can be turned into drink coasters
If you know of any new material or processes that could be beneficial to us and to the environment, please feel free to share with us so we may incorporate it into our environmental commitment.
